The People Who Sell to Musicians

9 03 2010

I met some musicians last week, but I’d also like to talk to people who want to sell to musicians and could potentially advertise on my site.

I’m going to track down a gentleman who owns a music equipment store in the West Village in the next couple days. I sincerely hope he’ll talk to me. I want to ask him what he’d like to see in a website for musicians and for folks who want to market to them. I’d like to find out what he would pay for and what he wouldn’t.

I am toying with the idea of charging people like music store and venue owners to post listings on my site. They wouldn’t be banner ads, they would be posts on the site, just like posts made by musicians looking for a new guitarist or a practice space, etc.

The goal is to tie the advertising into the content so that it’s less obtrusive and doesn’t interfere with the overall experience on the site. I would have to be careful not to make the whole site seem like a giant advertising ploy. But the more I can weave the advertising into the general environment of the site, my feeling is, the more successful the ads will be.

We’ll see what actual potential advertisers think.
